Digha, a well-liked tourist resort on the Bay of Bengal coast, is well-known for its unspoiled beaches, picturesque surroundings, museums, and religious sites. The British found the settlement of Digha in the late 1700s; it was once known as Beerkul. The first Governor-General of British India, Warren Hastings, refers to it as the “Brighton of the East.” However, the town began to become well-known after English traveler John Frank Smith moved here in 1923 and began writing about Digha after being enthralled with the area’s charms. He persuaded West Bengal’s Chief Minister at the time, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, to turn this area into a seaside resort following India’s independence.
